What kind of fish is good for first timers?

Postby kitin07 on Sun Mar 30, 2008 1:59 pm

my family already had fish at home as my parents started to but my friend asked me what kind of fish is good for her. this is her first time to have a fish as a pet and i am not sure of the answer. she's worried on how to take good care of it so i taught to ask in here. i want her to start having one but which is good for her is the problem? do we really have to choose according to our lifestyle or any thing will do?

livebearers like guppys, swordtails and platys. They are easy to keep, and always active!

We started with the simple goldfish- they are real easy to take care and you can get them really cheap- They also get along pretty well.

A small shoal of corydoras do well in a community tank. Bristlenose catfish are really easy, certainly one of my 'beginner' species

Goldfish are good for kids because they aren't terribly sensitive to dirty water, from what I can tell, and they are perfectly happy in a plain bowl.

I have to agree with Goldfish. My first fish was a Beta which I absolutely loved and mine was tough as nails thankfully, but I believe they require more care than a Goldfish.

Goldfish are the easiest, I think, I too had a Beta. Loved him to death, he was such a spirited guy, but they can't have friends. Goldfish are much more easy going and can have tak mates.

Another excellent first fish has to be a white cloud minnow. They are so small they don't need much filtration, and can survive pretty cool conditions. And I can never grow tired of them either. Great fish.
