How to take care of fish?

Fish like other species does have its own behavior and such behavior results to some problems. we have fish at home and i found out that big fishes eats the younger once. i do not know what to do for them not to eat the young once. I like to have more of them so want to know if there is a way on doing this or such behavior is normal? or do i have to keep the young fishes out from the big fishes aquarium?

Just buy fish that are the same size? Or is that a shade too obvious?
