birchir requirements

Postby corycat on Thu Mar 27, 2008 3:45 pm

I've seen a rather nice 'ornate birchir' for sale locally. I've read the usual books and so on... anyone have anything to add to the basic keeping requirements. They are a bit more tricky than the average fish, so any advice welcome.

My friend had a pair of Birchirs... not sure of the exact species though

They need some pretty meaty foods - she used large earthworms - which they gulped down. Also prawns and beefheart IIRC

Nice fish!

Heres my picture of the ornate birchir http://www.aquarium-fish.info/images/Polypterus/ornatipinnis

They had one at the Cotswold wildlife park - in a largish tank, with bogwood and rocks. Funny looking thing!
