Best Way to get rid of snails

Postby twocents on Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:12 am

What is the best way to get rid of snail? I don't know if I should bait them or empty the tank.

I only have three fish in that tank now so it wouldnt be to hard to remove them and set them in another tank, if I can find one that is.

Haw have any of you dealt with too many snails?

I keep a dwarf puffer or two in my fishroom at all times. Whenever I have two many snails I put him in (perhaps removing other fish first) for a month, and he sorts it out completely. Furthermore they eat the snails, and do so gradually, so you don't get the mass die-off and associated pollution of a chemical treatment.

Removing the snails manually is not en easy task, especially when there are eggs in the tank, but if you are really dedicated it is possible.

Clown Loaches will eat snails. Maybe not every type, but they certainly will eat some.

Thanks for the suggestions you guys, I am always worried about drastic changes to the tank so I was trying to avoid having to clean it out myself if at all possible. Going to go see what I can find tomorrow and get it taken care of ASAP.

Another way is to place a piece of potato in the tank. The next day it will be covered with snails. Scoop them out with a net. After a few gos at this you will have just manageable numbers left.
